Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is located in Southeast Oregon, south of Burns. It’s a pretty rural landscape, but the wildlife there is amazing. It is a must-see for all birders, and the birding community there is really one of family. It doesn’t matter if you know someone, everyone is excited to share in the excitement of seeing these amazing creatures together, and people often readily share locations of cool birds.
If you go, try to be respectful the keep your distance from the wildlife, and gently encourage others to do so as well. If we want to enjoy the privilege of seeing this beautiful wildlife, we must also return the favor by giving them respect and distance.

A male California quail - one of my favorites

The California quail's top-knot is made up of about six feathers

Lazuli buntings are beautiful songbirds with striking songs

I love the contrast of the barren and harsh landscape vs with the beautiful delicacy of this bird

Tree swallow, taking a break from catching insects out of the air

Warbling vireos really don't get enough credit. I mean look at that cute little face.
